METAL OBJECT SERIES
This object design series is a conceptual exploration of material tension, structural honesty, and mechanical poetics, developed as a case study of Philippe Hiquily and his publication Le métal direct (Cercle d'art, 1992). Deeply informed by Hiquily’s approach to direct metal construction, each piece in the series translates his sculptural language—articulated joints, counterbalanced forms, and industrial sensuality—into contemporary object design. The works emphasize exposed connections, asymmetrical equilibrium, and implied motion, allowing static forms to suggest rotation, suspension, and latent kinetic energy. Materiality remains raw and uncompromised: brushed steel, oxidized surfaces, and visible hardware function not only as structural elements but as expressive components. Sound operates as an extension of form, amplifying the internal mechanics of each object through resonant metallic tones, subtle friction textures, and restrained rhythmic oscillations. Rather than replicating Hiquily’s aesthetic, the series reinterprets his philosophy of direct engagement with metal, positioning each object as a study in balance, tension, and industrial intimacy.
