Fang peoples, Gabon (also Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon)
Wood, kaolin (white clay)
Late 19th–early 20th century
This striking elongated mask, coated in white kaolin, was worn by members of the Ngil society, a male initiation and judicial association among the Fang. The mask’s narrow eyes, high forehead, and serene yet imposing expression evoked the authority of ancestral spirits.
Appearing in nocturnal ceremonies, Ngil members confronted sorcery, upheld moral order, and initiated new members. The white surface signified the world of the ancestors, purity, and spiritual power, while the mask’s austere form commanded both awe and fear.
