Omono mask | Dogon | Large

£245.00

Dogon peoples, Central Mali
Wood, patina
20th century

This medium-sized Omono mask represents the white monkey, one of the sacred animals in the Dogon pantheon. The mask is distinguished by three raised, stylized vertical lines converging toward the chin, teardrop-shaped eyes, and the absence of a mouth. Its plain wood surface, enriched with a deep patina from ritual use and handling, enhances the mask’s presence. A small carved beard accentuates the lower edge.

Among the Dogon, monkey masks were worn in masquerades linked to funerary rites and social renewal, symbolizing both mischief and mediation with the spirit world. The white monkey in particular carried associations of unpredictability and sacred power, reflecting the Dogon’s complex cosmology.

Measurements: Height: 14in, Length: 12in, Width: 8.5in
Weight: 3.5lb
Material:‍ Natural Wood

Disclaimer — As many of our items are vintage or made by hand from natural wood, natural variations, markings, and signs of age are part of their unique character. This piece features two holes either side as a means to attach the mask to the face/head.
